Solid Golf Stance

Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 09.37.20Lot of the golfers talk about the importance of hitting the ball solidly, more greens and fairways in regulation and almost every single player wants to hit the ball longer.

Very few players however talk about solid golf stance – the most important thing if you want to achieve all the above and beyond. If you don’t have a balance and solid base you are not able to create powerful and explosive movements, period.

How you are able to know then if you have it or not?

I love how Titleist Performance Institute founder Dr. Greg Rose sometimes puts it in his Titleist Performance Workshops “It smells like a dog, it looks like a dog – oh, IT IS A DOG!”
So if you are missing a few yards (or more) or don’t hit the ball accurately enough you are more likely to find balance work beneficial for you. You wouldn’t start building your house without a solid base would you? So you need to think about your swing the same way!

How can you build a powerful and balanced golf stance then?

My absolutely favourite drill for it is to do little jumps up and down on your address position and once you start feeling that you are getting a hang of the “bounce” drill just land on the spot feeling like you could grow roots deep to the ground right then and there – you have found the magic! (If you feel still unstable repeat the drill until you feel like you do!)

I did loads of work on my balance one season and I was able to increase my average length on irons about 10 yards (which is about one club) in two months – so I’m big believer that this stuff works! Just to give you an idea Tour players average to stand on one leg with their eyes closed is over 20 seconds!

Give it a go and practise it every time you hit balls for 3 weeks and you will too find a big improvement the way you hit the ball!
Hope you have a great golfing week!
